Herd of Cats Shop Update & Photography Woes

Finally, a shop update! It seems like the last one was a million years ago – and it probably was! And for the first time since selling handmade online, I finally have photos that I am satisfied with. I decided last week, after having a very frustrating time with mediocre photos, that something needed to be done. I like to shoot in natural light, but my set up just wasn’t cutting it (I would just use my dining room wall as a backdrop – which was fine, but not great). Welcome pallet wall. I’d love to take the credit for that thing, but it was mostly my husband (I provided moral support?). And boy, do pallets have a ton of nails in them. But regardless of the not-so-fun time disassembling and reassembling pallets, the results are good and I am a happy camper. And the best part is that I can move the wall around as needed – no more waiting for the perfect time of day to shoot. Good photos = justice to the aprons.

Now on to the new aprons. I’ve got some adorable critter prints – I couldn’t resist! That octopus print!

And of course florals (goodness knows I love my florals).

I’m working on some new aprons styles, but my guess is that they won’t be ready for my shop until after the new year – November is the busiest month! It’s all good though.

So that’s what I’ve been up to lately.

Herd of Cats Aprons at Branch Market & Studio

Wow, what a whirlwind of excitement around here lately! Secret Wool Society has its first pop-up market coming up, and Herd of Cats aprons are about to make their first appearance in a real live storefront!

Herd of Cats has been pretty low-key lately as I’ve been focusing all of my energy on weaving, which is why I was surprised (and very flattered) when Branch contacted me asking if I would be interested in being a featured artist in their new market and studio. Um, yes please!

Branch is a brand new market and studio located in the small quaint community of Black Diamond, Alberta (just a short drive outside the city of Calgary), featuring unique handmade goods from local artisans, as well as a space to teach creative classes. I am so excited to have my aprons featured in such a lovely and unique space. If you’re local, I highly suggest making the trip out to visit Jodie and Rebecca, they have created a truly wonderful space.

And in case you’re wondering, I do have an Etsy shop update in the works for Herd of Cats, so even if you are not able to visit Branch in person, you can browse my aprons via the internet!

P.S. I will be back with a garden update soon! Things were looking pretty bleak after the hail storm, but luckily a lot bounced back and I’m looking at a half decent harvest. More details soon, I promise!

April Etsy Shop Update

For some reason sales have been slow since Christmas – I’ve had a few custom orders from people I know personally, but my Etsy shop has been pretty dry. Luckily the dry spell came to a close over the last week, which was good because I had been slowly working on a few new aprons to add in, so timing couldn’t have worked out better! These new patterns have been added in to the shop now:

Herd of Cats Aprons April 2015I’ve been doing lots of product experimenting lately as I’ve wanted to expand my shop for quite awhile with new and different products. So those will be coming in slowly over the next couple of months as they are perfected! Look forward to things like pillow covers (with Liberty of London and Nani Iro fabrics!), shoulder bags, and embroidered items – I’m so excited!

And remember that time about a month ago, when I wrote that I wasn’t planning on selling any weavings? Well, it turns out that I really, really love making them. And I have limited wall space. And I was getting lots of encouragement to sell them. So I decided to list a few of them in a new Etsy shop to see what happens. I’ll be posting more details on that, including a link to the new shop, within the next couple of weeks.

P.S. I’ll be back on Friday with a garden related post!

Feel free to visit my Etsy shop, Herd of Cats, even just to browse! 😉 Thank you for all of your support!

Herd of Cats Etsy Shop Update

I’ve been busy busy busy sewing up a storm in my makeshift sewing room (AKA the dining room). One of my goals this year was to work on building up the inventory in my Etsy shop, Herd of Cats, so I’ve added a number of new aprons, including a new design: the scallop hemmed apron. The scallop hem came about from a custom order I had at Christmas time – I liked the results so much that I decided to add a few to my Etsy shop. Although they are quite labor intensive, I think the results are adorable, fun, and unique.

I have a number of other projects and prototypes coming along for the shop, and I’m sure I’ll share the results once they’re ready for the world to see, but in the meantime, feel free to browse my Etsy and spread the word!

Shameless Self-Promotion

Several years ago I decided to take up sewing as a hobby. I borrowed a sewing machine from my mother-in-law, and my husband taught me the basics. It seems a little odd that my husband would be teaching me this skill, but where I grew up, there were not a lot of options in school for “fun classes”. You either took Art, Drama or Forestry (I despised Drama so I went with Art and Forestry). There was no Home Economics. A little weird since I grew up in a rural area, but whatever. The only other time I’d done any machine sewing before my 20’s was for a “small” craft project in 4-H (it was a denim backpack which was horrible to make and that I never finished). So I’m going to say I went in having no sewing skills whatsoever. I started off with a few small projects and then decided I really liked sewing, so I went ahead and bought my own sewing machine. That’s when my obsession with making aprons started. Aprons were my favorite thing to make because they are extremely cute and functional at the same time – and although most people primarily use aprons in the kitchen, mine get worn all around the house and garden. I kept making aprons for myself until I realized that I probably didn’t need any more for myself, but since they were my favorite thing to make, I had to figure out a way that I could continue making them, but not have a million of them in my pantry for myself. Plus you can only give away so many aprons as gifts before friends start faking excitement for yet another apron. So that’s when the idea of becoming a hobby seller was born and Etsy came into the picture. I’d been an Etsy buyer for several years, but only recently expanded into being a seller. I’m sure everyone knows what Etsy is, but for those who may not, it is an online marketplace for artists and sellers offering unique goods from around the world – I’ve purchased many amazing and affordable art prints, vintage wares, and arts and craft supplies over the years from Etsy sellers.

Setting up my shop has been interesting – I’ve made a few side sales outside of Etsy, but I’m still patiently waiting for my first Etsy sale! So with that said, I am currently offering $5.00 off any purchase for the week of October 17th-24th with coupon code 5FALL2014 – visit my shop here. And the other fun part is that my Alberta Etsy Team is also participating in sales for their own shops during this week! More information on the shops and sales can be found here.

Here is a sampling of the aprons that I have available:

All aprons are made from start to finish by myself from a pattern designed by myself – I do not currently offer international shipping on my Etsy listings because they vary so wide country-to-country, but if you’re interested in a shipping quote, please contact me directly via Etsy. Thanks for hanging in there, we’ll get back to gardening next week!
